Automobilista 2 v1.6 Review: A Transformative Update
Automobilista 2 (AMS2) has been on a journey since its release, evolving to carve out its place in the sim racing world. With the launch of version 1.6 on 29th November 2024, Reiza Studios has delivered what many consider a landmark update for the title. Packed with changes to physics, fresh content, and much-requested quality-of-life improvements, v1.6 is arguably AMS2’s most significant leap forward.
One of AMS2’s long-standing criticisms has been its tyre model, often described as “floaty.” While fans appreciated the game’s dynamic weather and visuals, the sense of connection between car and track sometimes fell short. Version 1.6 addresses this, and the results are impressive.
The tyre physics overhaul is immediately noticeable. Steering feedback is now detailed and natural, offering a nuanced connection to the front tyres. Locking up the brakes results in a light steering feel, which grips back up realistically when the tyres regain traction—akin to that familiar sensation of driving off an icy patch in a road car. While there’s still a slight sense of rear tyre float in specific slides, it’s far less pronounced and doesn’t detract from the overall experience.
Simply put, driving in AMS2 has never been this engaging. Whether navigating the LMP2s, the sleek new Alpine and Lamborghini LMDH cars, or revisiting old favourites, the updated physics make you want to lap for hours.
AMS2 v1.6 also brings a wealth of new content. The addition of IMSA tracks and cars, along with new manufacturers like Lamborghini and Alpine, broadens its appeal. The LMP2s, in particular, stand out as a highlight, with immersive cockpits and a fantastic VR experience.
A significant innovation is the introduction of preset models. These effectively turn AMS2 into a collection of specialised racing games. By selecting a preset such as IMSA, all settings—from AI opponents and track selection to realism settings—are automatically configured for that discipline. Whether you’re in the mood for endurance racing, rallycross, truck racing, or Brazilian stock cars, AMS2 delivers a tailored experience at the click of a button.
Multiplayer stability has been a challenge for AMS2 in the past, but version 1.6 significantly reduces data transfer between servers and players. This improvement has made setting up and running online events far more reliable, which is excellent news for platforms like Simracing.GP. Expect a surge in AMS2’s online racing activity as these updates continue to build player confidence.
The user interface has also received a facelift. It retains its familiar layout but feels cleaner, modern, and more intuitive. Observant players will also notice the placeholder for a career mode, hinting at exciting future developments.
Despite its past flaws, AMS2 has always excelled in offering unique content. From niche car and track combinations to a weather system that remains unmatched in adaptability and immersion, these strengths continue to shine. Coupled with stunning graphics—arguably the best in any sim—and an unparalleled VR experience, AMS2 remains a visual and sensory treat.
Automobilista 2 v1.6 is a turning point. It’s not perfect, with some minor refinements still needed, but it’s undoubtedly a huge step forward. The updated tyre physics, vast content, improved multiplayer, and refined UI solidify AMS2 as a serious contender in the sim racing space.
